Madeleine K. Albright was Chair of the National Democratic Institute from 2001 to 2022. She was a professor, author, diplomat, and businesswoman who served as the 64th and first female Secretary of State of the United States. With this annual award, NDI pays tribute to Secretary Albright’s legacy of unflinching courage and unwavering commitment to human dignity and democracy worldwide. 

The Madeleine K. Albright Democracy Award is the highest honor bestowed by the National Democratic Institute (NDI) and recognizes the trailblazing leadership of the individuals and organizations from the United States and abroad that have demonstrated a deep and abiding commitment to democracy and human rights.
